My voice is my password. Is it safe to use voice recognition?

voice biometricsPasswords, fingerprint scanners, facial recognition systems… People use these and many other access systems to protect their data. And what about a voice?

About 6,7 million people signed up today to the voice identification service of HM Revenue & Customs, while HSBC says that more than 10, 000 people are registering each week.

Such banks as Lloyds Bank, Halifax, Vodafone etc. are few of many others that have brought in such services. This allows customers to get access to their accounts using just their voice without hard-to -remember passwords and pin codes.

How does it work? Voice biometrics confirms a person's identity by analyzing his or her voice’s unique characteristics. In fact it compares a voice to the voiceprint the company or bank has stored in its database. Companies says it makes accessing an account fast and easy and it reduces fraud but how secure is it? In fact having a voice on the web, for example on a podcast, it’s possible to make a very close imitation of a person’s voice.

Earlier it was claimed that HMRC had collected millions of taxpayers’ voiceprints without their consent. This data is being held by a private company, KCOM (formerly Kingston Communications).

Graham Cluley, a leading computer security expert, says that there is a technology which can emulate people’s voices in real time. If a criminal has fragments of a person’s speaking from YouTube video, he’s able to create a copy of it.

Anyway, nowadays people prefer this kind of recognition more often. It’s expected that the number of users of the service will reach 600 million by 2020. The primary source can be read here > >
